In the Presbyterian Church, Elders and Deacons are elected annually by the congregation to govern and help the pastor care for the community of faith.

The Elders

First Presbyterian annually elects and installs elders who serve as a governing body for the congregation, the Session. The session takes care of the guidance and direction of the ministry of the local church, including almost all responsibilities of spiritual and fiduciary leadership. Each
elder sits on one of four church committees and rotates chairmanship annually.

Among other duties and cares, our deacons meet monthly to pray over the Prayer List. According to the Book of Order, “The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress.”
